A hidden gem in the American wine world is the German-based wine known as Gewürztraminer. Many wine lovers are unfamiliar with the taste of Gewürztraminer, let alone the pronunciation of it (guh-vertz-tra-meaner). This full-body, low-acidic white wine produces sweet flavors of pineapple, peach, cantaloupe, honey and other tropical flavors. With a profile like that, you can imagine that this dessert wine pairs beautifully with – you guessed it, desserts! Here are some fantastic sweet treat recipes to pair with your Gewürztraminer post-dinner.
What Makes Gewürztraminer Special
Gewürztraminer is one of the most aromatic white wines in the world. The name literally translates to "spiced Traminer" — a reference to the grape's origins in the Traminer region of northern Italy and its intensely perfumed character.
At Baldacci Family Vineyards, our Frederich Late Harvest Gewürztraminer comes from the Honey B Vineyard in the Carneros AVA. Carneros is one of the coolest growing regions in Napa Valley, and the long, slow ripening season allows the grapes to develop concentrated aromatics — lychee, rose petal, ginger. Our Gewürztraminer represents about 20% of the total Gewürztraminer grown in all of Napa County.
How to Serve Gewürztraminer
Serve well-chilled, around 45-50°F. Beyond desserts, Gewürztraminer pairs beautifully with spicy Asian cuisine, aged cheeses like Gruyère, and charcuterie boards with dried fruits and honey. It's also a natural match for Thanksgiving dinner.
Our Frederich Late Harvest Gewürztraminer is available online and at the winery. Book a tasting to try it alongside our estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.
